Pakistan’s photovoltaic market boom!

Pakistan's Renewables First think tank (hereinafter referred to as RF) released a report "The Great Solar Rush in Pakistan" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"). The report pointed out that in recent years, Pakistan's photovoltaic industry has developed rapidly, and the country has a strong interest in solar energy. The huge demand has attracted global attention. Pakistan has imported $4.1 billion worth of solar panels in the past four years, with 13 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic panels imported from China in the first half of fiscal year 2024 alone.

The country is currently expected to add 19,765 MW of installed capacity by 2034, and while almost all of the new additions are committed projects, only two power plants totaling 87 MW are being considered for optimization. This expansion plan is Implemented against a backdrop of recent underutilization of coal-fired and natural gas-fired power plants, continued construction of these projects will exacerbate existing pressures on the grid and could accelerate its decline if utilization rates fall below 10% over the next decade. Therefore, “Pakistan’s energy planning process must evolve to respond to changing demand patterns and move towards a more decentralized power system.”
